Introduction by Christine Chua:

It is unfathomable the assortment of suffering Darwin went through in 1864. Throughout the year, he was either having acid sickness, bilious vomiting, heart palpitations or great exhaustion, sometimes all at once. The medication or remedies prescribed included bismuth, pepsine, quinine, blue pill, grey powder, nitre, and last but not least, opium. Whenever he could, he visited the hothouse, sometimes several times a day, to help him to carry on with work and experiments. Mrs Darwin kept detailed records of his illness, ever devoting her time and attention to the care of her husband. In a week in June, she cryptically entered "C.!!".
