Introduction by Christine Chua:

Mrs Emma Darwin recorded her birthday on 2 May 1839. It is unclear who was 24 years old in the entry. She wrote many letters, mostly to her sister Elizabeth. The 'zoological evenings' were regularly held from May to December 1839. In June she started suffering from symptoms of pregnancy which lasted until August, where she remarked "half way now I think from symptoms". William was born two days after Christmas but the birth was not recorded in her diary.
