NEW BOOK— "Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries visited during the voyage of H.M.S. Beagle Round the World, under the command of Capt. Fitz Roy, R.N. By Charles Darwin, M.A., F.R.S. In two volumes. Harper & Brothers, N.Y.

This is a sketch-book, designed for the general reader. We have barely had time to glance over its well-stored table of contents, and find that the author has written a book that can hardly fail to find an interested reader in each into whose hands it may fall. There is just enough of detail to convey distinctly the impression designed, and an ever changing variety to awaken though and incite to further study. The careless, unpracticed and unstudied traveller, in passing among the scenes and objects described by Mr. Darwin, would wonder that one could find so much to instruct and edify. The publishers allude to the fact that the author was invited to accompany the Beagle on her trip by her commander and with the special sanctions of the Lords of the Admiralty. This fact is mentioned by the author himself in the English addition, and a mention of the fact indicates the expectations that were awakened, or rather the desire entertained, which Mr. Darwin spared no effort to gratify. In his work he gives at the same time a spirited sketch of the voyage and of his observations in natural history and geology, on a route that has seldom been explored.

The Journal of Researches, is in two volumes, neatly executed, muslin binding and is sold at $1.25—well worth the money. It may be had at WHITING and HUNTINGTON'S.
