Darwin Library CUL, CUL, BL, LNH; UT, 1002(4). [4 10 1839 London, Henry Colburn. Erasmus Alvey Darwin's copy of vol. III is quite normal inside and inscribed "Erasmus Darwin from the Author", but the case, in the original blue cloth as in the usual set, has only "Darwin's Journal" and no publisher's imprint: the lettering is slightly uneven and it is possible that it was applied by hand. The copy is now in Cambridge University Library, CCA. 24.5: no other like copies have been recorded. Copy of vol. III with Fitz-Roy on spine instead of Darwin - M.D. Cox, Stoke-on-Trent, 6. September 1984. The preface of Charles Lyell's Elements of geology, 1838, states that "through the kindness of two of my friends I have been able to refer frequently to two works not yet before the public: Mr. Darwin's Journal of travels in South America 1832 to 1836, and Mr. Murchison's Silurian System".
