The frontispiece is a portrait photograph of Charles Darwin by Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879) made in August 1868. The photo is signed both by Darwin and by Cameron, and Darwin inscribed it: "I like this photograph very much better than any other which has been taken of me." It is preserved in the Museum of the University of Utrecht.
