Variation 1st ed. 2d issue
"LONDON JOHN MURRAY" is printed on the spine not in two lines like the standard 1st ed. 2d issue, but in one line of the 1st issue. One copy seen, a family copy, later Francis Darwin's. (Now in a private collection in Virginia, USA) It also contains unique adverts. The 1st vol. contains no adverts but the 2d vol. contains both adverts dated 1868 (as in the 2d issue) and further ones dated May 1874. The errata from the first edition has been corrected.
