Emma, who was in every sense a practising Christian, so this confrontation has no bearing on the religious convictions, or lack of them, in the Darwin family. When Charles died in 1882 the family wished to have him buried at Down, ffinden or no ffinden, but the able advocacy of Sir John Lubbock persuaded them that it would be only proper for this great man to be buried in Westminster Abbey.
