not clear which distinguished Darwin is being commemorated. Galton has been used eight times, by Bennett, Biggs, Darwin, Lethbridge, Moilliet and Wheler, one of them a woman. William and Anne, of the seventh generation, had only two children, both boys; indeed William died after less than two years of marriage and when the younger son was a fortnight old. The elder son, again William, inherited Elston as well as Cleatham which he is said to have sold later. Nothing is said of the original
