OBITUARY.

Mr. Charles Robert Darwin, M.A., F.R.S., died on Wednesday at his residence, Down House, Down, Kent. He had been ailing for some days, but was supposed to be recovering, when he had a relapse on Tuesday night. Mr. Darwin was in his seventy-fourth year. He first became known as a naturalist by his work on the "Zoology of the Voyage of the Beagle," which vessel he accompanied in her circumnavigation of the globe. His great work on the "Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection," which led to so much controversy, was published in 1859, and his "Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex," in 1871. His later works are too familiar to require mention. Mr. Darwin married in 1839 the granddaughter of Mr. Josiah Wedgwood, F.R.S. He was a member of many English and foreign scientific bodies, and has had honorary degrees conferred upon him by the Universities of Cambridge and Leyden.
