MR. DARWIN AS A POLITICIAN

TO THE EDITOR OF THE DAILY NEWS.

SIR,─ Amid regrets for our loss, I have seen no allusion to the gap caused by Mr. Darwin's death in the ranks of the popular party in West Kent district, singularly overridden by rich and landowning Conservatives. He was a constant and generous supporter of the Bromley and Keston Liberal Association, and his influence can no doubt be traced in the fact that Down has a larger proportion of Liberal electors than any of the parishes in the Keston Group. Thanks to his strenuous efforts a few years ago, Lord Stanhope's attempt to close the beautiful and useful footpath from Knockholt Beeches across Chevening Park was thwarted, and in many matters connected with their material well-being the poor of Down and the neighbourhood have lost a benefactor.─ Yours truly,

Netherfield, Shortlands, Kent, April 28. H. F. C.
