"You have alluded most kindly to my knowledge of many remarkable men, and you have picked out three to whom I can refer with the greatest pleasure, because it was my priviledge to hold familiar converse with them not merely by interviews or meetings in ordinary and somewhat vain society, but by living under the same roof with each at times and being admitted to intimate colloquies with them. The greatest naturalist of our time was no doubt my friend Charles Darwin. (Hear, hear)"
