There is a particular interest in Darwin's son occupying the Presidency of the British Association, now meeting at Capetown. Professor George Darwin is an erudite scientist, copious in knowledge, so much so that he divided his presidential address into two parts owing its length. I do not remember a predecessor of Professor Darwin who has done this. Of the great Darwin, his father, an amusing story came to me some years ago. It seems that a four-in-hand with excursionists often passed an old man grubbing away among the roots of trees. The conductor of the party would blow a blast on the horn as he passed, and the old man would look up and gaze for a moment at the excursionists. They pitied him, but he did not need their commiseration. It was Charles Darwin making his unwearied researches into nature.

Professor Darwin will deliver the second half his presidential address in Johannesburg, a fortnight later.
