Darwin's Journal of a Voyage Round the World. Part I. London: John Murray.

THIS handsome little volume forms the twenty-second of Mr Murray's admirable Home and Colonial Library. It contains the first part of a Journal, kept by the author, in the course of a voyage round the world, in which are embodied many interesting and valuable observations in Natural History and Geology. The voyage in question commenced at the close of 1831, under the auspices of Captain Fitzroy, R.N., commander of H.M.'s ship Beagle, 10. It was undertaken under direction of the Admiralty; the objects of the expedition being, to complete the survey of Patagonia and Terra del Fuego; to survey the shores of Chili, Peru, and of some of the Islands of the Pacific; and to carry a chain of chronometrical measurements round the world. The work was published in a more expensive form some years ago; and the favour with which it was deservedly received, has suggested its re-publication in its present more accessible shape. Mr Darwin has availed himself of the occasion of its re-appearance, to introduce several important improvements; condensing and correcting some parts, adding a little to others, and rendering the work, generally, better fitted for popular reading. It is a work of much merit; and as such we recommend it to all lovers of amusing and instructive reading.
