—Mr. Darwin's new work on the "Origin of Species, by means of Natural Selection; or The Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for life," is exciting great attention, and threatens to revive the discussions formerly raised by the "Vestiges of Creation." The title will give some notion of the tendency of his views. They lead to a distrust of the idea of the immutability of species; and indeed, he says; "I believe that animals have descended from, at most, only four or five progenitors—and plants from an equal or lesser number. Analogy would lead us one step further, namely: That all animals and plants have descended from some one prototype." Readers of this delightful book, "Voyage of a Naturalist," will recognize in this new work his power as a writer, whatever may be the scientific verdict on his theories.
