The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication. By Charles Darwin, M. A., F. R. S.,
etc, Authorized edition, with a Preface by Prof. Asa Gray. 2 vols. pp. x., 494; viii., 568.
New York: Orange Judd & Co.
This American edition includes various corrections and some important additions which have been supplied by the editor. He also contributes a Preface, the entire reprint being made under an arrangement with Mr. Darwin. In its department it is one of the most remarkable works of modern times. As a storehouse of facts, apart from any of the author's special theories, which have been a subject of so much discussion, it is almost invaluable to the student of the subjects of which it treats.
The discussion is conducted on scientific principles, but in a popular manner, with an avoidance, generally, of technical terms. The work will attract attention, and the publishers have done well to reproduce it in a manner both liberal to the author and creditable to themselves.
