Darwin's Researches.
Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries visited during the voyages of H.M.S. Beagle round the World under the command of Captain Fitzroy, R.N. By Charles Darwin, Author of the "Origin of Species." New edition. New York: Appleton & Co.; San Francisco: A Roman & Co. 1871. 12 mo. pp. 500.
Darwin is a charming writer, and while telling us his scientific observations, manages to make a very readable story, with many observations on the countries and peoples visited of interest to the general reader. As a mere book of travels his journal deserves to rank high. He visited Brazil, Montevideo, Buenos Ayres, Santa Cruz, Terra del Fuego, Chile, Peru, the Galapagos Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia and Mauritius, and travelled much inland seeing at every town things worthy of attention and remark.
