Mr. Darwin had originally intended this work as a posthumous publication, but the continually-increasing interest manifested in his first work, "On the Origin of Species," induced him to believe that the public were ripe for the most advanced deductions from his theory of "natural selection."

In the present work, Mr. Darwin assumes, without hesitation or qualification, that man has descended, or, perhaps we should say, ascended by gradual developments, regulated the principle of natural selection, from the lowest point of animal life.

At the recent Trade-sale, by John Murray, the London publisher, 2,000,000 copies of this work were disposed of in advance of publication.
