Mr. Darwin (nee Gorilla) has been evolving (by natural selection, of course,) a new book, the subject of which is, "The expression of emotions in man and animals." For the purpose of proving the connection between the two species, he states that both men and apes, 'pout' and 'turn the cold shoulder' as an indication of displeasure. And he tells how it is done, in order that all juvenile apes or humans who like may pout without mistake. He says that the pouting here referred to consists of the protrusions of both lips in a tubular form, sometimes to such an extent as to project as far as the end of the nose, if this be short; and that pouting is generally accompanied by frowning, and sometimes by a booing and whooing noise."

THE PATRIOT recommends Darwin's directions on this subject to the distinguished gentlemen who are looking to be Pomeroy's successor. They will soon enough experience the "cold shoulder" of the Radical party, and will have little consolation save in pouting thereafter. If they begin early they may become proficient in booing and whooing by the time the legislature meets. After the vote has been taken there will be a general boowhooing in chorus from all the wailers.
