Mr. Darwin's opponents are making merry over his latest discovery –the expression of the emotions in man and animals. "Considering the wealth of knowledge evinced in the greater portion of this most mature work, it is a pity to find puerilities as the grave assumption that rattlesnakes made their own rattles by successive secretions and persistent lashings on the ground, founded on the chance discovery of a fortunate serpent that the scale at the end of his tail could be made to crepitate. This is not all. Mr. Darwin elaborately proves that, as dogs show their canine when snarling, and men sometime do the same when sneering –the latter are descended from dogs."
