DARWIN.

THE VARIATION OF ANIMALS AND PLANTS UNDER DOMESTICATION. By Charles Darwin. M.A., F.R.S., etc. Second edition. Revised. Fourth Thousand. In Two Volumes. With illustrations. 12 mo., pp. 473-495. New York: D. Appleton & Co.

Since the publication of this great work, seven years ago, its author has been studiously occupied with its subject, accumulating new facts, and certifying the old ones. In the present edition, he has introduced the most important materials procured in these researches, and has also omitted some statements and corrected some errors, that appeared in the original work. It is an evidence of the exceeding care with which Mr. Darwin pursues his investigations and narrates the results, that the emendations in these volumes, after so long a lapse of time, are very slight. The chapters on Bud-Variation and Pangenesis have experienced the greatest revision, some portions of these being entirely recast; but, in most other instances, the insertion of new matter amounts in each case to a single sentence. Trifling as these alterations may seem, however reader, and give the revised edition a considerable superiority over the first one.
