To whatever part of this elegant treatise we turn, the same characteristic strikes us, namely. a philosophic mind devoting its attention to flowers— a tendency to generalise, to educe order out of apparent confusion, law out of seeming chaos. While in knowledge of scientific details the writing reminds us of Darwin's Forms of Flowers, Climbing Plants, and Fertilisation of Plants, the generalisations are more frequent than any to be found in those works, and, consequently present the subject of botany to general readers in a more practical and popular form, than those yet more elaborate essays.
