THE MOVEMENTS OF PLANTS By Chas Darwin, assisted by Francis Darwin Published by D Appleton & Co, for sale by Keil & Bro Price $2
Chas Darwin has pushed investigation into the nature of plants to a remarkable degree The scientific world is indebted to his indefatigable labors for a vast amount of correct as well as valuable information in studies of the kind The botanist, in fact the scientists in general will reap rich harvests from the labors of this pioneer explorer in natural science The present work is a peculiar study, and it may at first seem of small utility what is presented in this volume The author is pressing forward in the line if investigation so long and so boldly pursued, and does not permit anything to deter him from working in the line of developments of his favorite theory The movements of plant is a curious study, and may seem like an apparent contradiction Yet there is nothing at all contradictory It is freely illustrated, and the fact clearly presented that plants circumnutate, and perform movements, in the course of their growth and development, which are exceedingly interesting, and the author in a philosophical manner points out the object, or reason, why nature has so endowed the plants The work is so full of instructive and entertaining matter that the student of science will read the work with benefit and self-evident satisfaction
