MENTAL EVOLUTION IN ANIMALS. By George John Romanes, M.A., F.R.S. With a Posthumous Essay on Instinct. By Charles Darwin. D. Appleton & Co.

Mr. Romanes was a friend and co-worker with Darwin, who left him a number of manuscripts relating to psychological subjects, among them th Essay on Instinct, appearing at the end of this volume. As might naturally be expected, the views expressed in this work are in substantial accord with the theories known as Darwinism. The author assumes, as the basis of his discussion, the truth of the general theory of evolution. Starting with that hypothesis it is, of course, a comparatively easy matter to follow out the theory in its application to the development of the mental faculties.
