Journal of Researches into Natural History and Geology. During the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle. By Charles Darwin. A New Edition. New-York: D Appleton & Co. 1890. This famous book in which Darwin first showed to the public the breadth of his view as a naturalist without giving any clear promise of his late achievements has been issued in various forms. There is a handy edition in two volumes, fine type. This is a luxurious edition in one large volume, and is the first illustrated one which has appeared. Mr R. T. Pritchell has been over the course of the "Beagle" and taken photographs, from which the greater number of cuts have been prepared. Others are from engravings selected before his death by Charles Darwin and furnished by his son. The voyage hardly yields in interest to the "Origin of Species"; on the popular side it has every chance against that learned but necessarily somewhat dry discussion of an intricate and profound theme. Any edition of this work is delightful reading, but this fine volume with its capital illustrations is indeed, a luxury. It is safe to say that persons who have already read the journal will always find passages that seem new to them, while those who have not are to be envied the pleasure they are sure to experience if they care at all for the strange, the curious, the suggestive in nature.
