Dear Sir,

I see from the Times that you desire the correspondents of your father to send to you the letters they may have received from the late lamented Dr Darwin. I enclose you a copy of the last communication I had from him. The essay to which he refers is entitled "Sunday in Lancashire & Cheshire,"

[7v]

and the journal whose place he commends is the Field Naturalist of which I send you by bookpost the first number. You will find marked in it two letters from Dr Darwin and a reference to a third which you would no doubt obtain from the Rev. M Geldart M. A. of Croydon.

I believe that you have already received the Manchester Guardian of May 2nd containing the three letters addressed to Mr Thomas Whitelegge, an artizan botanist of this district. If not I can

[7b]

probably send you a copy.

It may perhaps interst you to know that I have a scrap book containing obituary notices &c of your father from French, German, Italian, Swiss, & American papers. It will give me pleasure to forward this for your inspection if you should care to see it.  The original of the enclosed letter is also included in it. The few other letters which I have had from your faother in past years are, I am afraid, not to be found, but I will have a search for them.

I am

Yours faithfully

William E. A. Axon.

Francis Darwin Esq
