28 May—
My dear Darwin,
I got your letter at the J. C. yesterday. It will be a pleasure to write a few lines of remembrance of your Father. I wish I could express a small part of the love we all had for him. I had not many letters from him
[106v]
and I fear they may not have been been preserved with the care they deserved. As soon as I return home I will look for any I may have and send them to you.
I hope if you are at Downe I may have the pleasure of seeing you, if a call in the middle of the day would be agreeable
[106b]
to you. This week I shall be away, 1st at Hartlip, 2 at Norwich; but I should be able to get down for an hour some day in the following week—
If however you are not inclined to see friends do not hesitate to bid me not to come.
I had a communication about the Downe Friendly Club, and a prop
[106c]
osal to dissolve it. This was forwarded to me from Scotland, & I had just time before a meeting to express my opinion that such would be a foolish proceeding; and if persisted in I must resign my Trusteeship first—
With all our kindest regards
Believe me
My dear Darwin
Faithfully yours
J Brodie Innes
