[anontation by Darwin:] Maritime Commercial Gazette Nov 6 1856 (18)

In connexion with this subject Mr. Autard de Bragard has reminded us that he sent to the Society in 1836 the Upupa Capensis a bird taken at Morne Brabant shortly after a hurricane, and also another belonging to a species known at Madagascar, which had been killed at Savane, Coracias Madagascariensis.

Similar examples are recorded by Mr. Desjardins in the minutes of the Natural History Society. We there find mention of various species of Madagascar birds found in the forests of Flacq in 1830 and 1834, and of a piece of Bamboo almost covered with anatifa picked up by Mr. F. D'Emmerez, at Savane in 1831. Mr. Mylius, late Civil Commissioner at Seychelles, has also mentioned to us that he killed during his residence at Mahé, in 1840, a Flamingo, the only one known to have been seen there.
