The nomination for Lord Rector of the University of Aberdeen was in 1872. Darwin replied with regret that "the state of my health renders it quite impossible for me to accept this honour.''

Sir,
I beg to enclose for your perusal a letter from your father, which you may make use of if you think fit. I enclose the original letter & a copy. As I prize the letter highly may I request you to return it.
On Mr Darwin's refusal to be nominated as Lord Rector his committee resolved to ask Professor Huxley to become a candidate. He was elected by a large majority.
