of the Species to be mentioned. I cannot find out in Don or Persoon country of D. inermis. or D. Tatula (a)

D. inermis ♀** – Stramonium americanum minus Alkekangi folio. Imp. Josef. Hort. Cent. III. p. 44. to 82

D. ferox ♂ China H.
one capsule on the flowers of D. inermis gave 321. & the second 380 good seeds. – Whence many hybrid plants sprung, intermediate between parents but colour inexpectata – Pollen-grains, although many regularly shaped & filled with sperm, yet with them were interspersed many "vacuae et effaetae, manifesto certa natura hybridae indicio." – The capsules of those hybrids, cultivated sub dio. contained 120 to 130 seeds, but those transplanted in pots gave only 60 – to 70. – (NB this is most important we see injurious conditions aiding infertility of hybrids – in same way slight crosses aids fertility in aminals. Eyton's Geese)

[65v]

(a). He shows D. inermis Tatula & Stramonium by perfect fertility of offspring are mere varieties of each other. – important to find out what species there are, –

Dic. Class. says D. Tatula originally from India, & Loudon says N. America & since almost naturalised in Europe. is intermediate between D stramonium & D. fastuosus (from Egypt)

Says. D. ferox very like to D. stramonium.

But these two are sterile together. –

See Gaertner on Datura Stramonium & tatula & laevis being distinct from the great distinctness of their Hybrids. – p 273 important

p. 385 on number of seeds. –

Nmber of seed of D. laevis not given.

quite fertile

Hybrids have germinated intermediate between parent "est in summa grada faecundae". Hence infers not true species.
Inverse, gave plants quite similar & fecundissimae with 400 to 500 seeds in each capsule. – & even more.

p. 305. D. ferox ♀ China H.
D. stramonium ♂. Britain

Hybrids intermediate between parents "& notabiliter diminutam faecundatem monstrabant." – Doubts not the inverse would have succeeded, because he has shown by experiment in his 2d. Fortset. p. 125 Pamphet, that D. Tatula is large variety of D. stramonium, & quite fertile together and

one capsule of the D. Tatula produced 114. & the second 98 good seed. – Hybrids hence produced (& from inverse experiment given in his pamphet) both in form & colour, & in diminished faecundity were altogether similar. –

A vast number of failed experiments in Datura. Atropa Hyosciamus Nolana. Physalis Solanum Nicotiana given
