[28]

In Henslow's Catalogue of 1835 there are 525 genera (less 14 to be expunged as not even naturalised &) & 1495 sp (less 56 to be expunged)

But in all following calculations, Rubus with 21 species, Rosa with 19 Hieracium with 18 Salix with 71 & Carex with 61 (ie 5 genera with 190 species or 189 one being expunged) are omitted on account of so many doubtful species & on account of abnormal number of species. The calculations would have been more striking, if these had been left in those gives.

to be removed 525 [-]19 [=] Genera 506 / Species 1495 less 189 + 36 = 245 [=] 1250 [÷] 506 (2.47 Average species per genus as standard of comparison

Of genera having one or more varieties of any kind (with deduction as above of the above 5 gen)

there are 116 having 559 492 species.

116/ 559 492 (4.81 4.24 average species for such genera

Of genera having one or more varieties, as per table, which vars. have been thought by eminent Botanists to be species there are (with same deductions) 50 genera with 292 species

(B) 50/292 (5.84 average species to genera the genera with no var having only 1.94.

Of the 50 genera only 5 have one of more than 1 of these disputed varieties

Of genera having one or more vars, which vars in Henslows time were not considered species by eminent botanists (But it shd be observed that from most of these genera in addition have the disputed varieties—species) There are 92 with 474 spec

92/474 407 (5.15 4.42 average species per genus (Used)

N.B If only the genera & species which Henslow marks as probably to be expunged had been expunged & not the above 5 great genera, then the standard of comparison would have 2.81 & this would have 55 genera with 1 or more vars, thought by some to be species, & these 55 genera wd actually have had on average 8.74 species per genus!
