A Catalogue of British Plants by Rev. J. S. Henslow. 1835:

He makes of Phanerogams

To be expunged

As he makes 71 species of willows, I have expunged 50 both here & in next calculation}

511/1380 (2.71 percentage of Species & genera. —

Now I find there are 120 genera with one or more species having varieties, (some of these vars. seem foolish, as weeping Birch) & these genera, (with the same species, & the 50 willows expunged) have 680 species

120/680 (5. 66 percentage of species to genus.

So that here, as before, we see it is the large genera which have most varieties, for the varying genera have on average more than twice the species, than those genera have which have do not vary. It is the least adapted genera toward which vary most

N. B. Henslow give 61 species for Carex, but as used on both sides, not so very great error even if incorrect.—

N. B. Henslow states that 58 vars. ought to be (?) expunged, but— he does not show which these are; I must get some other work to use. —

Babingtons Flora wd be best, but say [illeg]

Henslows proportion without any expunging at all are for Phanerogams, for Great Britain

Genera 525/1495 (2.84 average species to genus

For Cambridgeshire

Genera 382/836 (2.18 average of species in Cambridge

In Britain 91orders /525 (5.6 orders genera to orders.
