Clematis glandulosa tropical. April 1864

Leaves broad ovate — peduncle short & thick seems singularly unfitted for movement — But young leaves, rubbed on any side bend to that, but I think chiefly downward — A twig placed so as to cause leaf to bend downwards, & leaf caused leaf to reverse & pass to opposite side; when taken away recovered its normal position.—

10 inches of string (1.64 gr) caused upper side of peduncle most slowly to bend, after several days.— 5 inches (.82 gr) did not act. — Leaves at first very young [sketch] (1.) [sketch] 2 ultimately [sketch].—

(No peduncle of leave first turned up & then like (1.))

Twines spirally well round stick.—

When like (2.) act as hooks?

1 1/2 turns one way & then straight & then reversed; though I tried by forcing to keep proper spire.—
