Trop. Tricol. Jan 31 1864

Tendrils very sensitive on upper & lower surface. Slightest rub made it into a circle. This t. had 5 little points at end. One moved in 30 seconds. One t. certainly moved spontaneously, but I doubt whether from side to side;— it merely reverted when old & clasped stick, so that all t. though rising at variable angles clasp stick— This movement like corkscrew of true tendrils.

These t. on summit of plant are new young leaves —

Branches move spontaneously like leading shoot— Lower t. drop off.

[82v]

Horace observed that plant climbed in Hot-house in one-way & then in other way. I see same fact in Greenhouse — Bears on reversed movement in Pea & echinocystis

A common twining plant could not do so.—
