Chapt. I

monkeys kept under confinement by Brehm Brehm alive in N. Africa, says that in this case they invariably died. Orphans monkeys were always adopted & well nurtured most carefully attended to by the other monkeys, either males or females. One baboon had so capacious a heart that she not only adopted a young monkey of another kind, but stole & continually carried about young species, but stole young puppies & kittens dogs & cats. (a text) One of the latter scratched her, whereupon she examined the kitten's feet with wonderment & without more-ado, bit off the claws. In the Zoological Gardens, I heard from the keeper & partly saw how an old baboon (Chacma) (C. chacma) had a dead adopted a Rhesus monkey, but when a young drill & mandrill were put into placed in the cage the baboon she seemed to perceive that though distinct species they were her nearer relative, for she at once rejected the rhesus & adopted both both: that no rhesus was very much discontented at thu being thus rejected, & like a bad naughty child would annoy & attack whenever he safely could,- the young drill & mandrill,
