ludicrous appearance. These monkeys became highly extremely nervous; for when one accidentally moved a wooden ball partly hidden in the straw, with which they were familiar as a play-thing, they all dashed instantly started away. as if a p in an instant. I afterward placed a common live snake in a paper bag These monkeys behaved very differently when a dead fish, mouse & some other new objects were placed in their cages; for though at first frightened, they very soon approached, handled & examined them. I then placed in one of the large compartments a a cobra live snake in a paper bag, with the mouth loosely closed; in a one of the larger compartments with many monkeys: one of the monkeys immediately approached, & cautiously opened the bag a little, & peeped in but & in an instant dashed sprung sprung away; & then I saw witnessed what Brehm has described, for monkey after monkey could not resist with head aloft raised high & turned on one side taking momentary peeps at the dreadful object into at the bottom of the upright bag. We One might fancy It would almost appear that monkeys
