From Prof. Oliver's observations from the spiral winding of valves of Leguminosæ, from hygrometric action this might have been suspected with tendrils corkscrewing; but early spiral shortening, when caught indicates a vital action; & I dried slowly tendrils of Bignonia, Cissus & several species of Passiflora & these did not become spiral in drying.— Spirits & Syrup
