The Fuegians rank amongst the lowest barbarians; but I was continually struck with surprise how closely the three Fuegians natives on board H.M.S Beagle who had lived some years in England & could talk a little English, resembled us in disposition & in most of their our our mental faculties.

If no other organic organic being except man had possessed any mental powers, or if his their the powers in man had been of a wholly different nature in man & other animals then it would we should probably never have have been impossible able to convince ourselves that they had such powers could have been gradually developed. But it can be clearly shown that there is no such fundamental difference of this nature We must also admit that there is a wider interval in the mental powers between one of the lowest fishes or if we choose to go lower to descend lower down between a slug or worm & one of the higher apes, than between the
