the vocal organs, through the principle of the inherited effects effects of use, would be strengthened & perfected perfected,; & this would react react on the voice power of speech.

But the relation between the use of the voice & language & the development of the brain is probably much more important. The mental powers must have been more highly developed in some early form progenitor of man than in any existing ape, before the most imperfect form of language could have first come into use; but we may confidently believe that the continued use & improvement improvement of language the powers of speech would have reacted through the brain on the brain mind by enabling & encouraging the mind it to carry on long trains of thought. A complex complex & long train of thought could no more be carried on without language the aid of silent words, than whether spoken or silent, than a long calculation without the aid of figures or algebra. It appears, also, that even an ordinary trains of thought almost requires some form of language, for the dumb & deaf & blind girl, Laura Bridgman, used the her fingers language whilst dreaming *(29).
