Ch I

Comparison of the mental mental powers of Man & the Lower animals

(We have seen in the last chapter that man bears clear traces clearly shows in his bodily frame traces of his structure of descent from some other & lower form; but it may be urged that the he differsence so greatly in his mental powers is so great, that there must be some error in this conclusion. & that he cannot be & so thus descended. If no organic being except man possessed any mental powers, or if his powers were fundamentally no doubt the interval difference in mental power is enormous, even of we compare the mental powers of one of with the highest apes, one of the a with lowest savages, who has no no words for to express any number higher than four, & who has uses no abstract terms for the commonest objects such & affections, such as love for most general ideas, as such as of for colours colour of trees &c, with one of the highest apes, *(1) in general, & one of the highest apes;

This would difference would no doubt certainly still hold good
