Summary on London Catalogue. 4th Ear 1853
I remove all plants thought to be naturalised, marked by italics — I remove Rosa, Rubus, Salix, Hieracium
In Cat. which is well sifted list by HC. Watson & Syme only few varieties recorded, & those which have never been thought to be species have been struck out: Mr W. has added some few vars. which have been thought by hardly more than one Botanist to be a species. Hence in this list such vars as albinos or monstrosities are mostly removed & vars have in some degree characters of species.
2d List. Mr W. has marked for me the plants always considered as species in this well sifted list & therefore manifestly excessively like species, but which yet have been thought by some few Botanist to be vars. & most clearly have strong characters of species, & not one wd be even doubted by a hair-splitter. If we look at these as really species, then the standard becomes altered for such could not occur in genera havng single species & these must be omitted
