Of Dicotyledons in Hookers New Zealand Flora there are 197 genera & 526 species, giving to each genus on average 2.68 species.

Of these genera, there are 60 genera with either one or more species, having 1 or more varieties (which I daresay some [will] consider in more some cases species). These 60 genera include 280 species, ie have on average 4.66 species to genus. — But there are 3 genera, much larger than average most others & very variable viz

Subtracting these (for from chance, it might be thought, if these had vars, it wd vitiate result) the result is 3.84 per genus, which is much above 2.68, (or properly with the 3 genera having 61 subtracted) 2.4.

(Even if Epilobium with 14. var. species be subtracted then the 56 genera will have 3.66 species per genus.—)
