Hooker has shown that where most species by no means most individuals — so the reverse — (I presume sociability comes in here) Hence it wd appear too favourable circumstance for a species, is not favourable ؟؟ for the variation & specification. It really appears that Herbert's notion statement that species of confined ranges are x most improved (hence vary in some respects most) is in connection with this fact of Hooker's.— Hence I must put it, when new forms introduced into island, it must not be perfectly adapted else will not vary. — On other hand, case of dogs; horses & cows singularly opposed to Herberts' view.
