Mills Review on French Historians Eding. Rev. Jan. 44 p. 38 says "It is the nature of all forms used on important occasions to outlast, for indefinite period, the states of manners & society, in which they originated" – in explaining the accusation & chief cause of overthrow of the Templars from there initiating practice of spitting on the Cross, to show their regeneration from a worthless state (so expression) alludes to differences in races & similarity of French & Irish characters.
