Z. Gardens March 27/68/ Insert after whereas from Brehm about curiosity & instinct of monkeys.—

I took coiled stuffed small snake to Monkey House & it caused much consternation —

A sharp cry of danger was uttered which was understood by others — Cercopithecus use, diana, nictitans, cepheus were much frightened —

Rushed into cages & dashed about & incessantly put out heads — Hairs on tail of C. nictitans became erect Some young monkeys cared little, especially some young bab the one old Anubis, n  but not one touched, whilst they handled a dead mouse—

The eyebrows, especially of American monkeys were incessantly raised — when placed at bottom of large scale, formed a circle at about distance of 3 or 4 feet & stared intensely with wide-opened eyes. & were nervous for a ball moving made several jump. — Clear instinct.
