The men of several tribes wear their hair so long as sometimes to sweep the ground. The chief of the Crows called "Long Hair" was elected chief from having the longest hair of any man of tribe viz. 10 ft 7 in.

p. 93. Amongst the Mandans there are many whose complexion appears as light as a half-bred, especially the women.

p. 94. Many Mandans of both sexes & of all ages have bright silvery grey hair, about one in 10 or 12 in the whole tribe are in this state, which is hereditary.

This hair is as coarse & harsh as a horse's mane, whilst the hair [insertion] correlation of other colours with the Mandans is fine & soft.

p. 1 Some of the other most remarkable [illeg] in Race of man, only occasionally appear as great Buttocks in [illeg] & certain strange continent appear in a woman.

p. 105 With Mandans astonishment is expressed by pressing the hand over the mouth & this is a custom with other tribes.

I am sure i have heard that the Indians think it degrading to keep their mouth open.

vol 2. 23. With the osages, Pawnees & 3 other tribes it is the custom to shave the head except a lock on the summit.

227 Beards are esteemed very vulgar with all tribes & all means are taken to eradicate them. [insertion:] can [line illeg]

About 18 out of 20 men are by nature entirely destitute. The few that have a trace pluck out the hairs at puberty. When this has been neglected a man may be occasionally seen with a beard of an inch or 2 in length formed of soft & sparse hair.
