March 22d — I have looked at Hogarth at Athenæum

Crying young children just like Bell — mouth not drawn back by upper zygomatic — but whole upper lips lifted.

Smiling corner drawn back

under * to Duchenne Passion glaring open eye, frown & exposed grinning teeth.

Negro boy open mouth widely open eyes

a woman gently crying corners of mouth well down.

[Expression, p. 243, n9: "In an engraving of one of Hogarth's wonderful pictures, passion is represented in the plainest manner by the open glaring eyes, frowning forehead, and exposed grinning teeth."]
