Distant & near objects viewed.

March 9./67/

Watched in room G. Tollet, Henrietta looking at microscopical & distant object, but there was only occasional slight frown & very slight wrinkling of lower eyelid, (as in reverse) ─

Emma being short-sighted squinned eyes much in cooking, but Harry W. did only slightly at distant objects. ─ Drawing eyelids into slit improved his vision of distant object wonderfully.

(April 14' Saw George & Frank lift [illeg] up by rope & lift great weight from ground, & no trace of a frown or contraction of Orb. palp.) —

April 19th Took all the Boys uncovered on rather bright day to look at distant object & all frowned more or less ─ Lenny with his great eyebrows frowned least. I think all open mouth & (contract lessen zygomatic) or with upper lip, so as to raise cheeks a little I presume to contract or prop the eyes a little. ─ George brought pyramidalis nasi into play. ─ (It is not more wonderful that frowning wd be carried on to reflection then raising eye-brows from surprise.)

April 21 I have been watching, (but sympathy makes observation most difficult & this accounts I think for few observation in Books of Travels) laughing & vy rarely never any frown; but George laughed most violently to night & he frowned excessively.─

Frank. (May 2) when shouting most violently closed his orbicularis well ─ when screaming I cd not see that Platysma acted probably association with muscles of scalp as Duchenne says.─

[3v]

Blowing hard did not with F. cause contraction of orbicular, there must be apparently resistance to passage of air outwards─

Saw Etty laughing violently slightly frowned.

Jun 2d Jenny Wedgwood ─ looking hard to distance frowned much & put hand to shade eyes.

Effie draws mouth into different shapes though not greatly in singing.─
