Swinhoe (27) says Chinese under grief or telling of death or other grief — others go into an hysterical fit of laughter —

[Expression, p. 208: "Mr. Swinhoe informs me that he has often seen the Chinese, when suffering from deep grief, burst out into hysterical fits of laughter." Darwin was citing Swinhoe to Darwin 4 August 1868, Correspondence vol. 16.]
