*(7) I am inclined to take a somewhat different view on this point, & attribute the movements about the mouth under excitement, to the habit common to so many animals of uttering inarticulate cries expressive of their sensation & emotions; but I shall return to this under (⸮) laughter & weeping. There appears, also, to be some physical cause for the muscle of jaws being particularly liable to semi-spasmodic & spasmodic action, as in ca yawning & lock- tetanus; animals dogs which do not use yawn as much as us, their jaws for speaking, & horses which do not use them for breathing yawn as much as we do.—
