A man, who had never seen a living man with his expression dignified. & with his actions heroic like — the Creator on the Vision of Ezechiel, yet recognised it when placed before him, as does an child infant a frown or smile.— it is the comparison of art with their imitative feelings, that raises it — makes it predict a [illeg] looks at it, as a man looks at imitation. The vision is given mind is not real. So need must not the model be.— A thing heard in infancy, when suddenly remembered always awakes the mind keenly. Guy Mannering heard as a child, always to me has an air of grandeur, of which no other work is alike.— The mind likes to have its dim obscure instincts [portrage] & rendered dear.— (I never saw a face of real dreadful horror, yet I can obscurely fancy it.— he who can realize this, will produce, a wonderful work of art. (though possibly not pleasing — I can fancy a face bearing with love, yet elevated with Virtue, such as I never saw.) Yet Reynolds says it is sound to suppose we are born with this taste; no needs of it
